About Weihsien Internment Camp

Weihsien Camp was a place where the Japanese kept civilians during World War II. It was located in Weifang, China, and was originally a missionary site. When the war started, people from Western countries living in China were sent there. Most of these people were missionaries, business workers, diplomats, and their families.
The camp held about 2,000 people from 1943 to 1945. Life there was tough—food was scarce, it was crowded, and the living conditions were poor. Despite this, the people in the camp tried to stay positive by organizing schools, religious services, and other activities.
In August 1945, American soldiers freed the people in the camp. One famous person who was there was Eric Liddell, a Scottish Olympic runner and missionary, who sadly died in the camp before it was liberated. Today, the camp is remembered for how the people there managed to keep their spirits up despite the hard times.
